BREAKING: Nigeria Launches Its First Unmanned 24-Hour Fuel Stations

Nigeria has taken a significant step toward modernising its downstream oil and gas sector with the launch of the country’s first fully automated, unmanned fuel stations.

A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited, founded by oil magnate Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, has unveiled the innovative stations, which will operate 24 hours a day without on-site attendants, offering customers a seamless refuelling experience powered by digital payments and SmartPump technology.

The initiative, a first of its kind in Nigeria, mirrors what is commonplace in many developed countries, where filling stations function efficiently without human attendants. Industry observers say the move signals a new era for fuel retail in the country.

The project is being implemented in partnership with Petrosoft Limited, a Nigerian technology company known for developing management and automation systems for the oil and gas industry. Under the agreement, Petrosoft will deploy its automated station technology across A.A. Rano’s network of over 200 retail outlets nationwide.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, A.A. Rano Nigeria Limited confirmed that the first set of automated stations is expected to commence operations within January 2026. Once operational, customers will be able to refuel, make contactless payments, and complete transactions independently, without the need for pump attendants.

According to the company, the technology is designed to reduce operational losses, enhance transparency, and reassure customers that they are receiving the exact volume of fuel paid for—a longstanding concern in Nigeria’s fuel retail market.

Commenting on the development, Petrosoft’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Joshua Denila, described the project as proof that locally developed technology can effectively address systemic challenges in the sector.

“Our systems are developed locally and built to international standards,” Denila said. “They are designed to improve efficiency, from single retail stations to large fueling depots.”

Analysts say the deployment of unmanned fuel stations could reshape consumer expectations, improve trust, and drive greater efficiency across the industry if successfully scaled.

As Nigeria continues its gradual push toward automation and digital transformation, stakeholders note that consistent commitment to innovation and best practices will be key.

Bit by bit, and by doing what is required, the country may well be on its way to a more efficient and globally competitive fuel retail system.
