Last week in Gboko, Benue State paused to honour a towering figure in its history as the Executive Governor, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, paid glowing tribute to General Atom Kpera (Rtd.), former Governor and Military Administrator of both Anambra and Benue States, in recognition of a lifetime defined by service, discipline, and principled leadership.
The occasion—General Kpera’s 85th birthday celebration—was more than a personal milestone. It became a convergence of memory, gratitude, and continuity, drawing together political leaders, elders, and sons and daughters of Benue from across generations. In speeches and reflections, his career was recalled as one marked by courage in command, steadiness in governance, and an enduring commitment to the unity and progress of the state and the nation.

Governor Alia described the retired general as a statesman whose leadership transcended eras, noting that his contributions remain instructive at a time when integrity and selfless service are once again in high demand. The celebration underscored how General Kpera’s legacy continues to inspire—reminding today’s leaders and young people alike that true leadership is measured not by the length of time in office, but by the depth of impact left behind.
As Gboko played host to this historic gathering, the message was clear: Benue remembers its own, honours excellence, and draws strength from the examples of those who served with distinction.
