Progress recorded on the 42km Obagaji–Okokoro–Agagbe road as Benue STATE Government opens a vital link between Agatu and Gwer West.

The Benue State Government, under the leadership of Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, is making steady progress on the construction of the Obagaji–Okokoro–Agagbe Road, a 42-kilometre stretch designed to connect Agatu Local Government Area with Gwer West Local Government Area.

An on-the-spot assessment of the project indicates significant advancement along the corridor, which for decades remained in deplorable condition, severely limiting movement, trade, and social interaction between the two local government areas. The poor state of the road had long posed challenges to residents, particularly during the rainy season when large sections became nearly impassable.

The road construction forms part of the Alia administration’s broader infrastructure renewal drive, aimed at opening up rural communities, improving security, and stimulating economic activities across Benue State.

When completed, the Obagaji–Okokoro–Agagbe road is expected to serve as a vital transport link for farmers, traders, and commuters, facilitating the smooth movement of agricultural produce from Agatu to major markets in Gwer West and other parts of the state. The improved connectivity is also projected to reduce travel time and transportation costs, while enhancing access to essential social services.

Residents of communities along the corridor have expressed optimism over the ongoing work, describing the project as a long-awaited intervention that promises to transform their socio-economic conditions.

Findings during a media tour of the project site revealed that several sections of the road have already been completed, while earthworks, drainage construction, and other preparatory activities are ongoing across multiple segments. Contractors were observed actively working on site, reinforcing confidence in the project’s steady execution.

Beyond economic benefits, the road is also expected to strengthen security in the area by improving access for patrols and emergency response services.

The present administration has consistently underscored infrastructure development as a central pillar of its governance agenda, with road construction identified as a critical driver of economic growth, rural integration, and improved quality of life for the people of Benue State.
