Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has declared that access to electricity is not a privilege reserved for a few, but a fundamental right that must reach every community, as he unveiled a major electrification drive aimed at accelerating economic growth across the state.
Speaking at the launch of the initiative, the governor announced the distribution of 600 electricity transformers and 10,000 solar-powered streetlights to communities spanning urban and rural areas. The intervention, he said, is part of a broader strategy to bridge infrastructure gaps, stimulate small businesses, and improve public safety.
“Electricity is not a luxury,” the governor stated. “It is a basic necessity and a catalyst for development. Every community deserves access to power.”
The large-scale deployment of transformers is expected to strengthen existing distribution networks, restore power to underserved neighbourhoods, and expand supply to growing settlements. Many communities have long struggled with erratic or nonexistent electricity, limiting economic activities and placing additional burdens on households and enterprises.
In parallel, the rollout of 10,000 solar streetlights is designed to improve nighttime visibility, enhance security, and support commercial activities after dark. Solar-powered infrastructure, officials say, also offers a sustainable solution for communities beyond the reach of stable grid supply.
Stakeholders in the state’s business community have welcomed the initiative, noting that improved electricity access directly impacts productivity, reduces operating costs for small and medium-sized enterprises, and attracts investment. Artisans, traders, and manufacturers often rely on expensive alternative power sources, a challenge the government says it is determined to ease.
The electrification programme forms part of the administration’s broader development blueprint focused on inclusive growth, rural transformation, and infrastructure renewal. By targeting both grid expansion and renewable energy solutions, the state government aims to create a more resilient and diversified energy framework.
Energy experts observe that access to reliable electricity is closely linked to improvements in education, healthcare delivery, and digital connectivity. Schools, primary health centres, and community facilities stand to benefit significantly from expanded power supply.
As implementation begins across the state, the government says priority will be given to communities with critical infrastructure deficits and high economic potential, ensuring that the intervention delivers measurable impact.
