Kano Hisbah Arrests Nine for Allegedly Eating in Public on First Day of Ramadan

The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested nine Muslims for allegedly eating in public on the first day of Ramadan.

The Deputy Commander of the board, Mujahid Aminudeen, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. According to him, the suspects — comprising seven men and two women — were apprehended after being seen eating during fasting hours.

Aminudeen said the arrests were carried out as part of efforts to enforce compliance with the religious obligations observed during the holy month of Ramadan.

“We arrested them and they are with us, where we will teach them the importance of fasting, how to pray and read the Qur’an, and how to become good Muslims,” he stated.

He did not specify when the individuals would be released.

Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, is a month of fasting from dawn to sunset, prayer and spiritual reflection. In Kano State, the Hisbah Board — an Islamic moral enforcement agency — routinely monitors public conduct during the period.

The development has drawn attention to the board’s enforcement approach, particularly regarding public observance of religious practices during the fasting month.
