Police Council Confirms Disu as Substantive Inspector-General of Police

The Nigeria Police Council has officially confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

The confirmation marks a significant leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force, as authorities signal a new phase in ongoing reform and modernisation efforts within the country’s policing system.

Disu, a seasoned officer with decades of service, assumes the top position at a time when security concerns remain pressing across various parts of the federation. His appointment is widely viewed as a strategic move aimed at consolidating operational efficiency, strengthening intelligence-led policing, and restoring public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

The Nigeria Police Council, chaired by the President and comprising state governors and senior government officials, is constitutionally empowered to appoint and confirm the Inspector-General of Police. The confirmation followed Egbetokun’s resignation, which created a vacancy at the apex of the force’s command structure.

Security analysts say the new IGP will be expected to prioritise internal discipline, intensify efforts against violent crime, tackle kidnapping and banditry, and deepen community policing initiatives nationwide. There are also expectations for renewed attention to officers’ welfare, professional training, and technological upgrades to enhance crime prevention and investigative capacity.

Although an official outline of his immediate policy direction is yet to be released, observers anticipate that Disu will present his strategic vision in the coming days. His leadership approach, described by colleagues as firm and pragmatic, is expected to shape the operational tempo of the force moving forward.

The transition underscores the importance of institutional stability in safeguarding national security, as stakeholders across the country look ahead to how the new Inspector-General will navigate evolving security challenges.
