Council for Legal Education Lists 114 Universities Approved to Run Law Programmes in Nigeria

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has released a list of 114 universities authorised to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme in Nigeria, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining standards in legal education across the country.

In a circular issued on Friday, Aderonke Osho, Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, stated that only the approved institutions are permitted to admit students into their law faculties. The council warned that admissions conducted outside the approved list would not be recognised for admission into the Nigerian Law School.

According to the circular, the directive is aimed at ensuring strict compliance with regulatory standards governing legal education in Nigeria. The council emphasised that the move will help protect prospective law students from enrolling in programmes that lack the necessary accreditation.

The CLE, which oversees the Nigerian Law School, is responsible for regulating legal education and ensuring that universities meet the required academic and infrastructural standards before admitting students into law programmes.
The council also noted that institutions seeking to run law programmes must undergo rigorous accreditation processes, including verification of facilities, availability of qualified academic staff, and compliance with approved admission quotas.

The release of the approved list is intended to guide prospective students, parents and admission bodies such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in making informed decisions regarding law admissions.
