Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has strongly condemned the reported assault of women during a festival in Ozoro, Delta State, describing the incident as unacceptable and a grave violation of human dignity.
The First Lady’s reaction follows widespread outrage over the incident, which allegedly occurred during a public celebration in Ozoro, a community in Delta State. The development has sparked concerns about the safety of women at public events and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women and vulnerable groups.
In a statement, Tinubu expressed deep concern over the attack, stressing that no society should tolerate any form of violence against women. She called on security agencies and relevant authorities to act decisively by identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the assault, noting that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.
She further emphasised the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding women, urging community leaders, event organisers, and law enforcement agencies to take proactive measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. According to her, ensuring the safety and dignity of women is fundamental to national development and social stability.
The First Lady also used the opportunity to advocate for increased awareness and education on respect, consent, and the rights of women, particularly among young people. She reiterated her commitment to initiatives aimed at protecting women and promoting gender equality across the country.
The incident has continued to draw condemnation from civil society organisations and members of the public, many of whom have called for immediate reforms to improve security at large gatherings and festivals.
Authorities are yet to provide full details of the incident, but investigations are expected to be underway as pressure mounts for accountability and justice for the victims.
