The Federal Government has approved automatic promotion for six civil servants who were abducted while travelling to sit for their promotion examinations in 2025.
The affected officers, all staff of the Federal Ministry of Defence, were reportedly kidnapped in Kogi State while en route from Lagos to Abuja for the examination exercise. The incident had drawn concern within civil service circles, given the circumstances surrounding their absence from the mandatory assessment.
Announcing the decision in Abuja on Saturday, the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Tunji Olaopa, said the gesture was in recognition of the officers’ commitment to duty and the exceptional situation that prevented them from participating in the examination.
Olaopa noted that the Commission considered the abduction an unforeseen and distressing event beyond the control of the affected staff, warranting a compassionate and administrative response. He added that the decision underscores the government’s commitment to fairness and the welfare of public servants.
The automatic promotion effectively places the officers at the level they would have attained had they successfully participated in and passed the examination.
The development has been described by observers as both a morale-boosting measure and a signal of institutional sensitivity to the challenges faced by workers, particularly in the context of security concerns along major transit routes in the country.
Further details regarding the officers’ current status and the circumstances of their release were not immediately disclosed.
