Hon. Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, has dismissed speculations linking his recent political move to any governorship ambition in Benue State.
Agbese, who represents the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, made this clarification on Tuesday in Abuja shortly after announcing his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Labour Party (LP).
Addressing journalists, the lawmaker stated unequivocally that his decision to leave the APC was not driven by any intention to contest the Benue State governorship. He emphasised that his focus remains on effective representation of his constituents and contributing to national legislative responsibilities.
Agbese noted that political realignments are often subject to varied interpretations, but cautioned against what he described as “unfounded assumptions” regarding his personal ambitions. According to him, his defection should be viewed within the broader context of political ideology, alignment, and the need to better serve his people.
The lawmaker reaffirmed his commitment to delivering on his mandate, stressing that his priority is to advance the welfare of his constituency through responsive lawmaking, constituency projects, and active engagement with the people.
His defection adds to the evolving political landscape in Benue State, where shifts in party allegiance continue to shape conversations ahead of future electoral cycles. However, Agbese’s clear denial of any gubernatorial aspiration seeks to draw a line between political movement and personal ambition, at least for now.
Observers note that while defections often trigger speculation about higher political pursuits, Agbese’s position signals a deliberate attempt to maintain focus on his current legislative role while navigating a changing political environment.
