Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully repelled coordinated attacks by insurgents, neutralising at least 10 terrorists during intense counter-offensives in Borno State.
The foiled assaults were reportedly launched by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), who attempted to overrun military positions in separate but synchronised operations. Military sources confirmed that the attacks targeted key bases within the North-East theatre of operations.
According to operational updates, the insurgents advanced under the cover of darkness, deploying heavy gunfire and explosives in a bid to breach defensive perimeters. However, troops responded swiftly with superior firepower, forcing the attackers into retreat after a prolonged exchange.
In the aftermath of the confrontation, security forces recovered assorted weapons and ammunition from the fleeing insurgents. Several terrorists were reportedly killed during the engagement, while others escaped with varying degrees of injury.
Tragically, an Army Major paid the supreme price in the line of duty. Military authorities described the fallen officer as gallant and committed, noting that his sacrifice underscores the ongoing risks faced by personnel combating insurgency in the region.
Security analysts observe that the latest confrontation reflects a pattern of renewed attempts by insurgent elements to destabilise military formations and assert operational relevance in the North-East. Borno State remains a focal point of counter-insurgency efforts, given its strategic significance in the fight against extremist violence.
The Nigerian Army has reassured residents of its resolve to sustain aggressive clearance operations and deny terrorists freedom of action. Civilians have also been urged to continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies to strengthen ongoing operations.
The development comes amid intensified military offensives aimed at dismantling insurgent enclaves and restoring lasting stability across the region.
