Christopher Musa: Officers Behind Foiled Coup Knew Consequences of Their Actions

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has said military officers arrested in connection with a foiled coup attempt were fully aware of the consequences of their actions before proceeding.

Speaking on the matter, Musa stated that the officers involved “must have made up their minds,” stressing that such actions do not occur without a clear understanding of the grave implications for national security, the military institution, and the country’s democratic order.

A total of 16 military officers, including a brigadier general and a colonel, were arrested in October 2025 over the incident. At the time, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) issued a public statement on October 4, attributing the arrests to “acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations,” without explicitly referencing a coup plot.

However, on January 26, the DHQ formally confirmed that the arrests were linked to a plot to remove President Bola Tinubu from office, putting to rest months of speculation surrounding the true nature of the case.

The development has underscored the military’s zero-tolerance stance on insubordination and actions that threaten constitutional governance. Defence authorities have reiterated their commitment to upholding discipline within the armed forces and safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic institutions, while investigations and due processes continue.

The confirmation marks one of the most significant disclosures involving internal security and civil-military relations in recent years, highlighting the government’s resolve to confront threats to national stability head-on.
