The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has directed the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME), Makurdi, to sustain rigorous, mission-oriented training aimed at producing highly competent combat engineers for the Nigerian Army.
The directive was issued on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, during the Army Chief’s maiden operational visit to Headquarters NASME in Makurdi, Benue State.
Addressing officers and personnel, the COAS underscored the strategic importance of NASME in strengthening the Army’s operational capacity. He described the institution as a critical pillar in developing the technical expertise and operational proficiency required to meet the evolving demands of modern warfare.
According to him, training at the premier military engineering institution must remain realistic, practical and aligned with contemporary operational realities to ensure enhanced combat effectiveness across various theatres of operation.
Lieutenant General Oluyede also reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare, accommodation and overall living conditions of personnel within NASME Barracks, noting that troop welfare remains central to morale and operational efficiency.
Earlier, the Commandant of NASME, Major General Idongesit Essien Ekpenyong, expressed appreciation for the COAS’ continued support. He briefed the Army Chief on ongoing training programmes, operational engagements, as well as infrastructure and welfare-related challenges facing the institution.
The visit featured an operational briefing, presentation of a commemorative memento and group photographs.
As a strategic military institution located in Makurdi, NASME continues to play a significant role in national security operations while contributing to the profile of Benue State as host to one of the Nigerian Army’s foremost training establishments.
