The Federal Government has commenced the evacuation of Nigerians who are willing to leave Iran as tensions continue to rise in parts of the Middle East.
The development was confirmed on Tuesday by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who disclosed that Nigerian diplomatic officials in Tehran have begun coordinating the safe movement of affected citizens out of the country.
According to her, embassy officials are escorting Nigerians through the Iran–Armenia border, where arrangements have been made to receive and assist them as part of efforts to guarantee their safety. The evacuation is being carried out in collaboration with Armenian authorities and other relevant partners to ensure a smooth and secure passage for those opting to depart Iran.
Dabiri-Erewa explained that the evacuation exercise is strictly for “willing Nigerians” who have indicated interest in leaving the country amid the evolving security situation in the region. She also reassured that, so far, no Nigerian citizen in Iran has been reported harmed, adding that embassy officials remain on ground to support and guide evacuees throughout the process.
The evacuation initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad during emergencies. Authorities have continued to monitor developments in the Middle East while activating diplomatic and consular mechanisms to safeguard citizens in affected areas.
Officials say further updates will be provided as the evacuation operation progresses and more Nigerians are assisted out of the affected areas.
