A devastating fire has destroyed the Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron 13 office and armoury in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, sparking concerns over security and safety in the area.
The inferno, which broke out in the early hours of Sunday, completely engulfed the Mobile Police facility, consuming administrative offices and the armoury. Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly, producing thick smoke and flames that could be seen from nearby neighbourhoods.
Residents reported hearing repeated explosions during the incident, believed to have been caused by ammunition stored in the armoury. The loud blasts reportedly caused panic in surrounding communities, forcing residents indoors as the fire raged.
Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Command said it was aware of the fire outbreak at the PMF Squadron 13 facility and that investigations had commenced to determine the cause.
Authorities noted that details would be made public once preliminary findings are concluded.Although no casualties have been officially reported, the extent of damage remains significant. Several operational assets, records, and weapons are feared to have been destroyed in the blaze.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, but police sources say possibilities such as an electrical fault are being examined. Security agencies have since secured the area to prevent unauthorized access and ensure public safety.
The incident has renewed public concern, particularly given Benue State’s ongoing security challenges. Observers have called for a swift and transparent investigation, as well as improved safety measures at security installations to prevent future occurrences.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
