The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has ordered the immediate suspension of several commanders operating along the Lagos–Seme border corridor over allegations of extortion.
The action follows reports of misconduct involving personnel stationed at the strategic international route, a major gateway linking Nigeria to neighbouring West African countries. The corridor, which facilitates significant cross-border movement of people and goods, has long been under scrutiny due to recurring complaints from travellers and transport operators.
In a statement issued by the Service, the immigration leadership described the allegations as serious and inconsistent with the core values and operational standards of the agency. The Comptroller-General reaffirmed a zero-tolerance stance on corruption and abuse of office, emphasising that officers found culpable would face disciplinary measures in line with established regulations.
An internal investigation has been launched to ascertain the extent of the alleged infractions and identify all individuals involved. Authorities have also indicated that the probe will examine systemic lapses that may have enabled such practices to persist along the border.
The suspension of the affected commanders is seen as an immediate step to restore public confidence and ensure an impartial inquiry. It also signals a broader effort by the Service to strengthen accountability and professionalism within its ranks.
Stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that addressing misconduct along key border points is critical to improving Nigeria’s international image and enhancing the ease of movement across its frontiers.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
