Rowdy Session Rocks Nigeria’s House of Representatives Over Controversial Motion

Abuja, November 4, 2025 — The House of Representatives witnessed a dramatic and chaotic session earlier today as lawmakers clashed over a motion concerning alleged illegal land allocations at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex.

The motion, moved by Hon. Ademorin Kuye of Somolu Federal Constituency, Lagos State, sought an investigation into the alleged irregular sale of public land and urged that the matter be referred to the House Committee on Public Assets. However, the motion quickly turned controversial as several lawmakers argued that the issue rightly belonged under the Committee on Commerce.

What began as a procedural debate soon spiraled into heated exchanges across party lines. When Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary, called for a voice vote, his ruling against the motion triggered an uproar from aggrieved members. Shouts filled the chamber as some lawmakers protested what they described as an “unfair ruling,” prompting a suspension of proceedings.

Attempts to calm the situation proved difficult, and order was only restored after the Deputy Speaker called for a closed-door (executive) session, during which members reportedly deliberated on the breakdown of decorum and the way forward.

In a related development, another motion by Hon. Mohammed Bio from Kwara State, addressing worsening security in some parts of the country, was also rejected — further heightening tensions in the chamber.

Political observers say today’s events reflect growing frustration among lawmakers over procedural inconsistencies and committee overlaps that often derail important national discussions.

While no official statement has yet been released by the leadership of the House, sources within the National Assembly suggest that efforts are underway to prevent a recurrence and to clarify committee jurisdictions to avoid future disruptions.

The House of Representatives has since resumed normal legislative business, though the echoes of today’s rowdy session continue to reverberate within political circles and among Nigerians calling for greater transparency and discipline in parliamentary conduct.
