Nigerian troops have recorded a significant operational success in the North-East, repelling a major insurgent attack in Borno State and neutralising three senior commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), alongside more than 80 fighters.
Security sources indicate that the encounter followed a coordinated assault by the террорист group, which was effectively countered by ground forces supported by strategic intelligence and sustained firepower. The troops, maintaining defensive positions, engaged the insurgents in a fierce exchange that ultimately forced them into retreat after suffering heavy casualties.
Among those reportedly killed were high-ranking field commanders whose roles had been central to ISWAP’s operational planning and execution in the region. Their elimination is expected to significantly disrupt the group’s command structure and weaken its capacity to coordinate large-scale attacks in the short term.
Military authorities have described the outcome as a decisive victory, underscoring the resilience and improved tactical efficiency of Nigerian forces in ongoing counter-insurgency operations. The success also reflects intensified efforts to degrade insurgent networks and reclaim vulnerable territories across Borno and the wider North-East.
Borno State has remained a focal point of insurgent activity for over a decade, with both ISWAP and Boko Haram factions seeking to assert control over strategic locations. However, recent offensives by the military have increasingly targeted leadership hierarchies and supply chains, signalling a shift towards dismantling the structural backbone of these groups.
While the latest development marks a notable gain, analysts caution that sustained pressure and coordinated regional efforts will be required to consolidate progress and prevent regrouping by surviving elements.
The Nigerian military has reiterated its commitment to restoring lasting peace in the region, assuring citizens that operations will continue with renewed intensity to eliminate remaining insurgent threats.
